Phoenix, Arizona: Day One

Travel diary time! My final trip of 2016 was to Phoenix, Arizona with Visit Phoenix. I arrived in the desert town for the first time ready for all of the history, architecture, farm-to-table food, and sunny weather that Phoenix, Scottsdale and Mesa, Arizona all had to offer me. For next five days I embarked on what was a jam-packed itinerary, soaking it all in along the way!

Checking in to the Hotel Valley Ho was like checking into a retro dream. As one of the best-preserved mid-century modern hotels in the country, first opened in 1956, Hotel Valley Ho once was a hideaway for Hollywood stars visiting Arizona, including Bing Crosby and Zsa Zsa Gabor. The hotel was designed by local architect Edward L. Varney, who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, so immediately you know you're in for a treat.

Spacious rooms, friendly service, an iconic, round pool, and stunning rooftop views of Camelback Mountain and downtown Scottsdale left me with an A+ review of this noteworthy Arizona hotel!

After our tour of the hotel (thanks, Ace!) we headed out for dinner at Second Story Liquor Bar in downtown Scottsdale, which is only a few minute walk from Valley Ho. Intrinsically driven by storytelling, the restaurant's ambiance felt rustic and vintage while the food and drinks were modern and elevated. We dined on fresh, farm-to-table cuisine and craft cocktails. My favorite cocktail was the Every Rosé Has its Thorn made with vodka, hibiscus liqueur, orgeat, lemon , bitters and Veuve Devienne Sparkling Rosé - Yum! Then, after a long day of traveling, we headed back to Valley Ho for some much needed sleep before a busy day ahead.

More on my trip coming soon but you can learn more about Phoenix, AZ in the meantime at Visit Phoenix!
